Stock Market Video: Stay Cautious

In this week’s Stock Market Video, Cabot Top Ten Trader Editor Mike Cintolo discusses the market’s excellent week, but cautions that we still don’t have a buy signal yet from our market timing indicators. He says that we could see a double-bottom scenario here and warns that getting back getting into the market too soon could be a costly mistake. A lot of stocks have been chopping around, so take it slow until you know if the new trend is confirmed. Stocks discussed: Lululemon Athletica (LULU), GT Solar (SOLR), Under Armour (UA), Intuitive Surgical (ISRG), Illumina (ILMN) and Biogen...

Time Versus Timing

June 20, 2011

If you invest in the stock market long enough, you’re bound to hear a lot of often-repeated phrases. Today I want to talk about two that are frequently bandied about, but completely opposed to each other: “It’s time, not timing.” “Timing is everything.” Value investors are firmly in the “It’s time, not timing” camp. Stock Market Analysis Video: Correction Underway

In this week’s Stock Market Analysis Video, Cabot Market Letter Editor Mike Cintolo says that since the beginning of June, the sellers have clearly been in control of the stock market. Mike also discussed how to know when to get back into the market and why you should wait until the major uptrend resumes. Stocks discussed: Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), SodaStream (SODA), Lululemon Athletica (LULU), Under Armour...

For my stock pick today, I’m turning toward the biotech sector, which has held up well during the market’s maelstrom. Granted, most of the time in the biotech world, all you can find is a lot of pipe dreams with stocks that are knee deep in clinical trials and only hope to launch a new drug candidate. I generally stay away from such firms, because they can fall apart in a hurry if the trials go awry or if a competitor jumps into the fray. So my stock pick today is … a small company with no sales and...

Retail Stock Rebound

May 30, 2011

The Great Recession has been over for some time now (though many people are still out of work) and several sectors are benefiting from the recovery. One of them is retail, which was hard hit in 2008-2009 when many people closed their wallets and stopped spending. In April, same-store retail sales in the U.S. topped analyst expectations and rose 8.9% on average, one of the largest increases in the last few years. Same-store sales are an important indicator of a retailer’s internal health, so the big jump indicates that people are shopping again. And lately, many great retail stocks...
