Would You put a Wind Turbine on Your Roof?

September 4, 2008
By

An article in today’s New York Times posed a similar question to readers alongside a story about people who have recently installed small wind turbines on their roofs but may never recoup the cost. The installations have been mostly in cities with a lot of wind, like Boston and San Francisco, but the problem is that the turbines might be too small to ever really provide enough energy for their installation to have been cost effective. A few people in the article (even someone from Harvard University) said that they wanted to install the turbines as an outward show...

I Want Action

I’m concerned about the lack of progress made by our elected officials in Washington on the major issues of the day.  Where are the solutions for our energy crisis, social security funding or a cost efficient health care system?  We have been patiently waiting for decades to solve each of these, and other, problems.  Has our democratic way of living broken down and become obsolete?  Do our decision makers place party politics and getting votes in front of patriotism and doing what is right for America and its citizens? No, the system isn’t broken, and no, we don’t need...

Cost of Oil Leads to Telecommuting and Wind Farms

August 5, 2008

Two articles in The New York Times Sunday edition caught my eye and I wanted to share them with you. One of the articles is a discussion of how employers and employees are coping with rising gasoline prices. Some are telelcommuting more, while others are working shorter weeks with longer days. This is particularly relevant today as oil has hit a three-month low. The other article is actually a Q&A with T. Boone Pickens, who Brendan Coffey wrote about in a previous post. The interview doesn’t reveal much, except that Pickens still thinks that the Swift Boat campaign against...

Greening College Campuses

A few months ago, I wrote an issue of Cabot Wealth Advisory about the business of Green. I’m really interested in environmental issues and always on the lookout for when Green topics overlap with investing. I stumbled across an interesting article in The New York Times special Education Life section that talked about Greening college campuses and how this is affecting where students decide to go. One person interviewed in the story even said she hadn’t seen this much of a push for change on college campuses since Apartheid. The students are taking shorter showers and engaging each other...

From Oil Baron to Wind Power Backer

July 16, 2008

Get ready for the media blitz. “It’s time to stop America’s addiction to foreign oil.” So said millions of dollars worth of print ads taken out in newspapers across the country last Tuesday. In a full-page photo of a bright blue sky and a series of wind turbines the ad stated its case. “In 1970, we imported 25% of our oil. Today, it’s 70% and climbing. We will send $700 billion to foreign countries this year. Money that is building their countries. Not ours.” That’s a powerful point. The man making it? Oil billionaire T. Boone Pickens. Last week...
