Spotlight Stock: Activision Blizzard (ATVI)

So, what should you buy today? To my friend–the one who wanted to buy Netflix–I suggested the Spotlight Stock from the latest Dick Davis Investment Digest: Activision Blizzard (ATVI). Activision Blizzard owns and publishes three huge video game titles–Starcraft, Call of Duty, and the enormously popular World of Warcraft–in addition to many smaller games. The titles have been popular among gamers for ages: Call of Duty is on its eighth version, and World of Warcraft is the world’s most popular online multi-player role-playing game. But the stock is just being discovered by investors … as attested to by the...

5 Great Dividend-Paying Stocks

We recently conducted a short survey of our Dick Davis Investment Digest subscribers. Several common concerns were market volatility and economic uncertainty (which I wrote about two weeks ago here). Today, I want to address a third common refrain. As a subscriber from Texas put it: “Maximize dividend income while preserving capital.” Two other respondents complained about the low interest rates on fixed income investments. Howard B. wrote that he would like help “finding the highest possible yield with investment grade or high credit quality. I am looking for a combination of appreciation and current cash flow yields.” Charles...

Today’s stock is one from the bargain basement. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (GT) tanked with the market in early August, and has yet to get back on its feet. But AlphaProfit Sector Investors’ Newsletter Editor Sam Subramanian doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with the company, and sees a buying opportunity here. Here’s his recommendation, from last month, which was in the latest Digest: “The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company shares are down sharply from their $18.25 a share July high. The tire maker’s fundamentals are on a sound footing and the decline represents a buying opportunity. In the...

The Stock Market is Not the Economy

Last week, we conducted a short survey of our Dick Davis Investment Digest subscribers. One of the questions asked them to identify the biggest concern or challenge they face as investors right now. The top two answers were market volatility and the economy. Several respondents used the phrase “economic uncertainty.” Obviously, our subscribers’ concerns are valid: the economy’s direction is, indeed, uncertain. However, the obvious level of concern over this makes me think I should revisit a point I wrote about here a few months ago. Simply, the stock market is not the economy. The market can, and frequently...

Three Defensive Blue Chips

Three Defensive Blue Chips

I’m always noticing trends in the stocks recommended in the Dick Davis Digests. When markets are choppy, advisors recommend a lot of conservative stocks and value stocks that look like good bargains. Sectors like health care and technology and retail have phases as well, driven by news, economic reports and sentiment. And natural resources and gold have seen some of the biggest popularity booms recently, with interest spiking every time the international financial system takes a hit. Every once in a while though, I find a cluster of stocks so closely related that it surprises me. Last week’s Dick...
