A Blip on a Dismal Chart

I want to say a quick word about stocks that experience big price increases in daily trading. I can usually predict that I’ll get a couple of questions about any emerging markets stock that throws a double-digit percentage rise in a day. That kind of jump is just catnip to investors who are tired of a market grinding downtrend and hunger for some upside. My example is SinoHub (SIHI), a Chinese supply chain manager and order fulfillment service for cell-phone components that has suffered through a precipitous drop since it came public in August 2009. The stock hit its...

Stock Market Video: Tightening Range

In this week’s Stock Market Video Review, Cabot China & Emerging Markets Report Editor Paul Goodwin sees the market’s range of motion tightening up–with swings much narrower than they had been. This is a good sign, says Paul, as continuing tightening could lead to a new rally. But right now, there’s still lots of resistance, so Paul’s advice is to remain heavily in cash until the market direction becomes clearer. My stock pick for today is a Chinese Red Chip stock that has all the hallmarks of a big winner, but whose chart says a little more patience is necessary. The company is NetEase.com (NTES) a Chinese Web portal that offers a standard menu of Yahoo-like services, including news, blogs, search, matchmaking, social gathering spaces and so on. But what sets NetEase apart from other Chinese Web giants like Sina.com (SINA) and Baidu (BIDU) is that it derives 85% of its revenue from online gaming operations. The hot items among the company’s massively multiplayer online role-playing games are Fantasy...

China Mobile and Brazil Foods: Two Emerging Leaders

While a few leaders are starting to surface in emerging markets, we’re nowhere near anything like a real bull market. The sensitivity to bad news exhibited by developed market stocks is even higher for their emerging counterparts. I have two stocks that I’ve been following, although the reasons for my interest are different for each. China Mobile (CHL) is the dominant wireless service provider in China, with well over a half billion subscribers. China Mobile became a powerhouse by rolling up the old leading provincial wireless networks and turning them into a national network. The company has hit some...

Stock Market Video: Good News

In this week’s Stock Market Video, Cabot China & Emerging Markets Report Editor Paul Goodwin says it’s good to have some good news after what seems like an extremely long period of counseling people to be patient. The major indexes look much better, which has given Cabot’s market timing indicators a buy signal. It’s time to put some money to work, but don’t jump in with both feet, instead, let the market pull you in. Stocks discussed: Express (EXPR), SanDisk (SNDK), Select Comfort (SCSS) and Sally Beauty (SBH). Click below to watch the video!
