American Superconductor: A Favorite Growth Story

My stock idea for today is one of my favorite growth stories … but the stock itself hasn’t done much in months.  So why write about it here?  Because it’s showing signs of wanting to get going … and once it does, I believe it’s going to embark on a major run. The company is American Superconductor (AMSC), a firm that tried for years to make a name for itself in high-performance superconducting wires.  And, in fact, that business should do well over time, as the U.S. and other countries build out so-called smart grids. However, the big money...

The Debate Over China’s Government

What kind of government does China actually have? It’s not an idle question.  The country is governed by the Chinese Communist Party, but the constitution of the People’s Republic of China doesn’t actually mention The Party.  And while the 1982 State Constitution–along with the laws passed by the National People’s Congress–is technically the highest authority in the land, many of the rights guaranteed in both Constitution and laws are subject to interpretation and policy, and are routinely ignored. Why Investing is Fun

I want to speak up for one big benefit of stock investing that doesn’t get a lot of publicity. I think it’s fun! Yes, fun.  And I don’t just mean that making a big killing on a hot stock is fun. I think the daily drama and the brain work and the blood, sweat and tears of researching, buying and selling stocks is totally engaging.  (It may even be as immersive as playing World of Warcraft or diving into Grand Theft Auto, but I wouldn’t know from first-hand experience.) I know it’s a fact that the ranks of investors...

If You Had $1 Million to Invest: China vs. India?

Paul Goodwin, editor of Cabot China & Emerging Markets Report, is scheduled to appear on Squawk on the Street tomorrow (Thursday, November 12) at 10:40 a.m. The topic: If you had $1 million to invest would you pick China or India? We’ll host the video on our Web site as soon as it airs. Paul was on CNBC recently discussing how U.S. investors can profit from China’s rising middle class. Paul explained that until recently 40% of Chinese growth came from exports, much of it to the U.S., but now Chinese exports have shrunk to 20% as new Chinese...
