Ramifications of Obama’s Clean Energy Apollo Program

I recently paid my electric bill and was putting the inserts into the recycling bin when I saw one detailing where all my electricity comes from. I was surprised to see that my utility, National Grid, sources 74% of my electricity from what I’d term Green resources: 34% natural gas (considered transitionally Green because it burns cleaner than oil and coal), 27% nuclear, 6% trash-to-energy, 3% large hydroelectric, 3% biomass and 1% wind. Another 12% was imported power, almost certainly hydropower from Quebec (which, if true, would bring the Green energy total to 86%), while 9% was coal and...

Stock Charts: When to Buy and Sell

January 22, 2011

What is this valuable information that I wrote about on Friday? The stock chart and trading volume data. Using a stock chart and volume data you can reliably predict the future of a stock. It’s not 100% reliable of course—nothing yet truly predicts the future—but I’ll argue it is more useful than tweets any day. Why is a...

I’ve often thought if I were to operate a storefront as a psychic (and don’t ask me why I’d end up in business as one), the first thing I would say to everyone who walked through the door would be “I was expecting you.”  It certainly would make a favorable impression, especially to those inclined to use a psychic’s services. But can anyone tell the future? Foreknowledge of events has been the subject of intense speculation from the Oracle of Delphi through the science fiction movies of today. So it is in the stock market too. One recent sign...

The Energy Goldilocks: As Oil Rises, Green Stocks Surge

December 30, 2010

There’s a smart way to play the rising price of oil (discussed yesterday), and it’s one that returns us to the idea of creating wealth through appreciating assets: Green stocks. Higher oil prices get people antsy and anxious for alternatives. This sends them looking at electric cars and hybrids. It gets corporations serious about natural gas-powered fleets, trading up to next generation batteries and buying high-tech fuel cells for remote power needs. It gets local governments and utilities moving on energy efficiency programs and incentives for energy sipping LED lighting. It gets national governments pushing for wind farms and...

Where are Oil and Gas Prices Headed? Hint: Not Down

Where are Oil and Gas Prices Headed? Hint: Not Down

I’ve mentioned before in this space that I’m not a car guy. I drive one, sure, but I view a vehicle simply as a means to get from one place to another. I think my disdain for cars comes from when I was 16. I got my license and my brother-in-law gave me his old, no-frills Subaru hatchback. My first car. Except I couldn’t afford the insurance, $1,600 for 6 months—more than I pay now for two cars annually! While working hard to cobble together the money for the insurance, one day I came home from sorting photos at...
