Stock Market Analysis Video

October 8, 2010

In this week’s Stock Market Analysis Video, Cabot China & Emerging Markets Editor Paul Goodwin says the markets have been a little unsettled recently. They had a great run up, and every once in a while when markets develop a great deal of momentum any bad news will not only trip the market up for a while, but it will also give the leaders a hard time for a while. Stocks discussed include Apple (AAPL), Baidu (BIDU), Netflix (NFLX), Amazon (AMZN), NetApp (NTAP), Riverbed Technologies (RVBD), Under Armour (UA), VanceInfo Technologies (VIT), Home Inns (HMIN) and Sina.com (SINA). Earnings Season: How to Watch Your Step

October 8, 2010

With earnings season just beginning—Alcoa (AA) is the traditional first reporter, and it announced results yesterday after the NYSE closed—there will be plenty of both agony and ecstasy to go around.  And that will make it even more important than usual to keep your emotional equilibrium. I know that taking an earnings hit can be very painful.  I’ve had personal holdings that dropped up to 25% after a disappointing earnings report.  The stocks that have been the strongest (which means they had attracted the most hot money) usually drop farther and faster than more sedate issues.  And I felt...

Keeping It Simple, Again

Stories that involve good advice tend to get re-told, and the ones with real value pop up again and again. When the admiral dies,...

Trend-Spotting: Electronic Payments

One of the great things about my job editing the Dick Davis Digests is that it makes it easy to see patterns and trends arising in the investing advice of the day. The hundreds of analysts and editors that we follow all have different investing philosophies, and as many viewpoints on the market. But there are distinct currents and themes running through their advice at any given time. Most recently, I took note of a particular stock that just seemed to keep popping up. This happens sometimes when a stock is in the news, like BP, or when a...

Greed is Good?

Greed is Good?

The sequel to Oliver Stone’s 1987 classic “Wall Street,” a movie that I’ve been looking forward to seeing for some time, was released last week. The original starred Michael Douglas as the ruthless Gordon Gekko (whose character popularized the motto “Greed is Good”) and Charlie Sheen as Bud Fox, a young, too-eager stockbroker caught up in trying to get to the top at any price. The sequel tacks a question mark on the end of Gekko’s famous motto, appropriate since we watched the financial system and stock market essentially melt down in the 2008-2009 bear market and recession. The...
