I went out at lunch today to get some gasoline before heading up to Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire for the weekend and I got a very pleasant surprise. The per gallon price had dropped yet again to $3.91! This is down from $3.99 earlier in the week and about $4.12 at its peak in this area of Massachusetts. It’s sort of sad that a gallon of gasoline that costs $3.91 makes me so happy, but after watching the price skyrocket week after week (and sometimes day after day), it’s a welcome relief to see the price coming down.
How are gas prices in your area? Are you seeing a decrease, are the prices staying the same or even rising?
In Cambridge they have been about 4.11 or so for a while, but that’s why I ride my bike everywhere.
It’s also interesting to see how geography effects gas prices, even at a micro scale. For example, the Shell station on River Street and Mem. Drive is usually 5 cents cheaper than the gas station only a block away, because the other one is obscured by bushes. Maybe they need to compensate for lost traffic?
$3.89-$3.93 in Mesa, AZ. My company just announced a pre-tax spending allowance for vanpooling or riding the bus to work. They will also share in the cost up to $30/month.
Boy would I love to see $3.99 a gallon. Here in San Diego fuel is $4.39 on a good day at Costco. Does this affect the way we live? You bet! I am on a fixed income. Yet, everything around me is going up. My portfolio is filled with holes as I backed down to a 70% cash position. And God did I get burned on my stock with C when I wasn”t watching. Lesson learned.
This is what’s so crazy about these gas prices. I live in southern Indiana, across from Louisville, Kentucky and I just purchased gas for $4.02 and was, like you, excited about it. The $4.02 is down from $4.25 just a little over a week ago. Does this now mean:
1. There is now an oil glut and we can expect prices to drop more.
2. Iran is not an immediate issue and we aren’t going to start a third war.
3. The oil company executives don’t have anymore more room to stash their billions.
4. This is the calm before the storm. Their baiting us on.
5. We’ve finally caught up with European gas prices and “they”, whoever that may be, don’t want to push us anymore.
Whatever the reason, I’ll take it as it comes since I can’t seem to do anything about it other then drive less or ride my bike like Mike In Cambridge.

Paid $3.81 to fill up near home and discovered Love’s was selling regular right off I-77 in Fort Mill, about 5 miles away for $3.59
Thanks for the great comments! It’s very interesting to see what’s going on all around the country with gasoline prices. I saw gasoline for $3.88 a gallon this weekend in New Hampshire, but my relatives in California say that it’s still well above $4 a gallon there.
